…..“We are always in contact with the environment. Space, spaciousness , are words we use to describe our experience with the element of air. It can conjure light/ shadow, wind, movement and stillness. When we consider a cup for instance, its ‘cupness’ includes the space of the container not just its physical walls , and its potential for holding. Breath is the only continuous aspect for ever-changing human beings. From our first breath to the very last breath we are granted, whether rhythmic, faint, gasping, hail and hardy, breath is our constant conduit between outer and inner worlds. Breath is the bridge joining the often exuberant exterior life and our private, personal inner longings. ‘Breathing Space/ Espace vital ‘ is an invitation to fully engage in the mysterious potential for expansion, pausing, halting, and letting go…

Stephen H. Kawai,
artist, gardener and chemist/professor (retired),
“ I often say that gravity is like oxygen to a mobile. Indeed, unless hung up so that each individual element experiences the pull of our planet, the piece would be a chaotic, immobile mess. Mobiles also breathe in their own way when prompted to move, slightly inflating and deflating or jiggling around as they settle back into their preferred arrangements.
Breathing Space reflects this aspect of my mobile work.”
